Dire States: New York

When I was approached by tournament organizer Nestor Medina to design the logo for his upcoming Infinity tournament, I said “Sure thing buddy”. When he said he’d like me to paint up a bad ass model as prize support, I said “Hell yeah!” The tournament in question is Dire States: Battle for the Empire State, and the sexy ass model is Ajax the Great. So here’s a few nice pictures to stimulate your geeky little eyeballs. Enjoy!

Here’s the logo that I designed. I figured the Empire State Building was a perfect, recognizable icon that would translate well as a patch. The tech-styled shapes in the background are inspired by the Infinity game art for hackers. I used Orbitron for the text which is used a lot throughout the Infinity rule books and art. The colors are taken from the Albany flag. Now onward to the really pretty stuff. Behold, Ajax the Great!

I got to try out a lot of new techniques on this model. First off, I applied almost all the khaki with my airbrush. I still need a lot of practice for anticipating where the paint will come out from the gun, but the final results worked out great. This is also my first attempt at painting metals without using metallic paint. Also known as non-metalic metal (NMM), this technique is something that I’ve never been a very big fan of, but tried it here because it’s more reminiscent of the studio Infinity models. I have to admit, I really enjoyed painting the metal like this and will definitely use it more often in the future. Finally, I’ve never attached a model onto an acrylic base before, but it’s pretty straight forward. 🙂

Well, not much else to say about that folks. Hope you dig the pictures and keep those brushes wet! O_o
