HIYA!

Spring is here and with it comes the birds, the bees, the flowers, and the trees. And loads of ass kicking rail road workers! This week I did some work on my Mei Feng crew for Malifaux. Stay tuned for an Easter egg at the end. 😉

Mei Feng, Arcanist Master

Mei Feng, Arcanist Master

Mei Feng is a Master with an affinity towards heat, steam and metal. She’s known for making all kinds of hardcore constructs out of rail road and train parts. On top of her magical prowess she’s pretty sick in melee. With moves like Jack Hammer Kick, and Tiger’s Claws she’s a lot of fun to play with.

Emberling, Totem

Emberling, Totem

Emberlings are spirits that occur naturally in Malifaux. They’re made of fire, coal, and gum drops. This was a great model to practice my fire painting skills. I chose to go with an orange flame to tie him back to the orange accents on the rest of the crew.

Rail Workers, Minions

Rail Workers, Minions

Rail work is a dangerous job in Malifaux and sometimes accidents happen. When a laborer looses a limb, Mei Feng has been known to patch them up with all new “parts”. I especially liked painting the sore areas of flesh around the bionic parts. That’s gonna need some ointment!

Metal Gamin, Minions

Metal Gamin, Minions

Boy, these Archanists sure do like their gamin. I really like the design of these models. They’re so different from other gamin and even more so from each other. Painting them was super easy. A little dry-brush, and a couple washes and they were done.

Rail Golem, Minion

Rail Golem, Minion

Now up to bat, the Rail Golem. When I first saw this model unpainted I thought “meh”. Now that it’s all painted and sexified I’m really diggin’ it. Again I used a very simple technique for the metals (mostly Washes and dry-brushing) but the results are very eye-catching. Once all the metals were done I took some extra time with the blues and oranges to add visual interest.

Easter Egghead

Easter Egghead

So me and my family painted Easter eggs this Sunday.  Your guess is as good as mine as to what comic book character inspired this. I told you there’d be an Easter egg at the end of this post. 😀 Peace out!

Farewell Frosty

Greetings! Last week I said I’d have pics of my Mei Feng crew for this weeks post, but I decided to switch it up. Stay tuned for Mei Feng next week instead. So here to help us say goodbye to winter is Rasputina, The Ice Queen.

Archanists-Rasputina1

Rasputina. Master

Yes, ’tis time to bid farewell to the winter season and say hello to the spring. However, before we do so let’s take a look at some winter themed minis. Rasputina thwarts her foes with spells like December’s Curse and Biting Chill. She’s cold-blooded! In the future, I plan to add some winter themed runes and images to her cloak. Solid blue will just have to do for now.

Archanists-EssenceOfPower

Essence of Power, Totem

I wanted the Essence of Power to look like it was on the verge of freezing to death. Pallid but not yet dead. I ended up using a very light shade of flesh mixed with a small dab of baby blue and highlighting up to pure white. I’ll probably use a similar technique for Avatar Rasputina’s flesh.

Archanists-IceGolem1

Ice Golem, Minion

This is my first attempt at painting ice and I really like the way it turned out. The basic premise is to paint the model the opposite way you would normally. So, instead of darkest to lightest  toward the light source you go lightest in the recesses and darker in the uppermost parts. I intend on doing a tutorial on this technique in the future with Avatar Rasputina.

Archanists-IceGamin

Ice Gamin, Minions

Gamin seem to give me the most trouble when it comes to color schemes. I painted these guys 3 different ways before I ended up with this very simple color palette.  I used the same Reaper Master Series Paints (RMSP) that I used for the Ice Golem. Marine Teal, Surf Aqua, Ghost White and then a light wash of Games Workshop Asurman Blue.

As a side note: I’ve recently started using RMSP and I must say, they’re the shit! The colors that they offer are vibrant and easy to work with and the color triads make going from shade to highlight a breeze. The dropper bottles are excellent for mixing colors perfectly. Most of all, I really like the matte finish to the paint. Less glossiness makes seeing what I’m working on much easier. I highly recommend them.

Archanists-SilentOne1

Silent One, Minion

The Silent One was the last model I painted for this Crew and believe it or not I finished all these models in less than two weeks. The secret is a super simple color palette. I really enjoyed the winter theme and am already working on Avatar Rasputina (almost done) and Snow Storm (not even close). Can’t wait to post the results.

Anyhoo, there ya have it. I hope you liked what you’ve seen. Stay cool!

Burn Baby Burn!

This weeks installment features the fire wielding, winged, sexy lady,  Kaeris. She’s a lot of fun to play with and a real pleasure to paint. For her crew box I tried to keep the cool gray color scheme I stared with my Ramos crew, but with a little twist. I added some gray to represent their M&SU Asset affiliation and of course, some flame effects where appropriate. Me likey!

Archanists-Kaeris1

Kaeris, Henchman

So, here’s the lady of the hour. I’m really pleased of with the fire effects on her base. It took a few tries to get them just right, but I finally came up with a very easy technique using tweezers and a twist. I was tempted to sculpt flames in her hands as well but I was afraid they’d look like big globs of ice cream. That and I was feeling lazy. 😛

Archanists-Student

Student of Conflict, Totem

Anyone who’s fielded Kaeris as a Henchman knows who this little guy is. He follows around his Master learning the ways of combat and how to become a powerful magi. Fear him! I wish I could say it was a joy painting him up, but I honestly found him kinda boring. I guess sometimes a model just rubs you the wrong way.

Archanists-FireGamin

Fire gamin, Minion

Yet another fun little construct minion to add to the Arcanist arsenal. I painted each of these models at least twice before I found a color palette I liked. First I tried red skin, then brown, and black. I finally decided on gray. It ties in better with the overall color scheme of the crew. Then for the flames I tried blue, orange and purple before I stuck with yellow. I’m particularly fond of Ken to the right. Hadouken!

Archanists-Gunsmith1

Gunsmith Male, Minion

Archanists-Gunsmith2

Gunsmith Female, Minion

The Gunsmiths are a great unit. They’re versatile, survivable and excellent marksmen. Plus, the models are bad ass! It would suck for the male if he had a spontaneous misfire on those guns under his neck.”Woops I tripped over this rock!” BLAM… POP!

Archanists-Iggy

Iggy, Minion

“Hi! I’m Iggy. Wanna play with me?” FWOOSH! “I done burnded you fool!” I’ve only played one test game with Iggy. He’s interesting but I have a hard time squeezing him into my Kaeris crews. Looking at this picture makes me think he might need something a little extra on his base… more flames! 😀

Well, there you have it. My Kaeris crew. Hope this inspires you to try out some fire effects for you models. Next week, Mei Feng. WAAPA!!

Eeek! Spiders!

Hidee ho! So for the next few posts I’m gonna be focusing on my Malifuax Projects. Malifaux is a table top game produced by Wyrd Miniatures.  It’s based on a surreal, wild west, Victorian, steampunk fantasy world. A world where you’ll find undead hookers, shape shifters, the Boogy Man, gremlins and a whole slew of other characters fighting for control of a precious resource called Soul Stones. I’ve been collecting the Arcanists faction for a bit and have always liked their elemental theme. Plus, I’d been wanting to play around with source lighting for a while and the Arcanists have a lot of models that lend themselves well to that technique. So, without further adieu here’s some Arcanists fo yo ass!

Archanists-Ramos

Ramos, Arcanist Master

This is Ramos, the Leader of the Arcanists and the Miners & Steamfitters Union. His crew was the first one I collected because I really like the mechanical spider theme that he’s got going on. He’s the brilliant scientist every nerd always wanted to be. Well, without the whole old geezer part. This was also one of my first experiments in creating a secondary light source. I’d really like to figure out a practical way to create lighting tendrils arcing from his hand to the mechanical tentacle. If you have ideas please share. 🙂

Ramos, Avatar of Invention

Just in case there was any doubt of Ramos’ obsession with mechanical spiders, look at him when he changes into his Avatar form. Level up Ramos! There were a couple challenges when working on this guy. From sculpting the flames on his hands to creating a base that wasn’t too distracting but still supportive of those spindly legs. I’m really happy with the way he turned out.

Archanists-SBE1

Steamborg Executioner Minion

This is the Steamborg Executioner, aka Hank. Hank likes long romantic strolls and decapitations. Assembling this damned thing was the most difficult part. Once he was assembled the paint job was pretty straight forward. At first, I was tempted to paint him all  dead flesh-like, but I thought that might be a bit too cliche. So, I opted for a warmer skin tone to balance out the otherwise cool palette of his armor and lights. He looks great on the table top as a centerpiece model but doesn’t last long. For some reason people are intimidated by him. :-/

Large Steampunk Arachnid Minion

EEK! Spiders!! Run for your lives! Continuing with the spider theme, we have the many iterations of the Steampunk Arachnid. I tried to suggest some subtle reflective lighting on their bases. The results are good but could still use a bit more intensity. Ah, the artist is his own worst critic.

Archanists-BrassArachnid

Brass Arachnid, Totem

The Brass Arachnid is one of my favorite totems. It’s a simple sculpt that represents the steam punk theme very well. With a few quick techniques you can get very nice results in no time. What really brought him to life is the lighting.

Archanists-ElectricalCreation

Electrical Creation, Totem

Holy floating, incorporeal, electrical, explosive, mines Batman! I wish I could field an entire army of these little buggars. They’re so much fun and a real pain in the ass for my opponents.

So that’ll do for now. Next time I’ll post my Kaeris crew. She’s a fire based Master so expect more pyrotechnics. Stay classy San Diego!
